Setting up fax

N

Nicole

When I try to set up the fax in xp, I am prompted for the
xp sp1 cd ....i insert it into my drive, then it prompts
me for the location of the file (which i cannot seem to
get to). I looked online and this problem exists for
networked setup...that is not my case. i am running xp
on a stand alone pc...i am not too technical so i am
afraid to try to fix the issue based on the network
resolution given in the knowledge base. Anyone have any
suggestions???

Thanks a ton...
Kind Regards
Nicole

If you have applied SP1, these files may have been moved to a different
folder (ServicePackFiles\i386), and you will need to direct the routine to
that folder.

Russ,

This tip got me by the first file it wanted, but then it
stopped again wanting fxscfgwz.dll, which is not anywhere
on my system. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

When the installation routine is unable to find the necessary installation
files (even when directed to the appropriate i386 Folder) it usually means
that the installation files are compressed. This is often the case when the
files are pre-copied by a manufacturer on the hard drive. If you do a search
for the files that the installation routine claims are missing (fxsapi.dll
and fxcfgwz.dll) you won't find them, but you will find fxsapi.dl_ and
fxcfgwz.dl_. These are compressed DLL files and will need to be
decompressed. Double click on them and you will get a prompt for the file to
use to open them. Click on BROWSE. and select Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor,
which is in the system folder. With any luck it will uncompress them all and
make them visible as DLL files. The install routine still may not find these
files. If so, then you must manually direct the installation routine to the
i386 folder that contains these extracted files.

Well, that sounded logical. But Seearch found no file
named fxscfgwz.* anywhere on my system.

What next?

Thanks for the assistance.

I installed it from the Full Version (not Upgrade) CD that
I purchased.

I installed on a freshly formatted C: drive, using the
NTFS file system. After the initial installation, I
immediately went to Windows Update and downloaded the
Critical Updates. Once they were installed, I then
installed SP1 from the Windows Update site.

I have installed and reinstalled XP several times in the
past (but always on a FAT32 partition), and I never had
this problem. I probably installed the Fax Services before
installing SP1 in those instances, but I don't remember
for certain.

Surely these files are somewhere on the XP installation
CD. Can I pull them from there somehow?

If I must, I suppose I can reinstall XP, and then install
Fax Services before installing SP1. But I'd prefer not to
have to go through all that again, if possible.

Did you install from the CD or copy the installation files onto the hard
drive first? Most likely, the files would have been moved to the
ServicePackFiles\i386 after you applied SP1, but may not have been if you
installed from the CD. What happened when you directed the installation
routine to the i386 folder on the CD? What happenened when you directed the
installation routine to the ServicePackFiles\i386 folder?

Your questions gave me an idea. I popped in the XP
Installation CD, and selected the option to install
additional Windows components from there. Fax Services
installed without a hitch from there. I'm fixed.

Thanks for your patience.

Ah. You must have missed my first post where I instructed you to direct the
installation routine to the original i386 folder.

Do you have the original CD that came with your pc? If so, insert the CD
into your CD drive (say, E:). If the installer asks for location, browse to
the i386 folder so the installation routine can find the necessary files.
