setting up dns servers

Hasan Kachal

Well, I have leased a block of IP addresses, and will have two domain
controllers, which will also act as DNS servers: e.g. ns1.domain.com and
ns2.domain.com.

My question to the experienced, is: how do I go about making these dns's
live on the Internet?

The other question I have, is: Will my dns server synch with other dns
servers around the globe? or will it just contain domain names that I own?

Thanks for your input.

Register host names for them with your registrar.

It will resolve names by using recursion from the root servers, by using a
forwarder to your ISP and from the domain names it has in its zones.

or will it just contain domain names that I
That too, it will be Authoritative over the domain names it owns, but not
for the names you don't own.

Kevin,

When you say "Register host names for them with your registrar", do you mean
to register the ns1 and ns2 of domain.com? Because I have already
registered domain.com. Would I have to pay to register ns1 and
ns2.domain.com with godaddy.com? Or can I just type my name servers
hostnames under "Set Name Servers" for my domain?

Thanks,
Hasan

You shouldn't have to.

I'm not sure if GoDaddy has an interface for creating DNS hostnames but they
should, most registrars do. You may have to just click around the
administration site to see.
But the nameserver hostname and IP must be registered and listed with the
gTLD servers before you can use it.
