setting system restore points hang

Recently, my PC has been hanging upon installation of new applications at the
setting system restore point; it will eventually go through but may take up
to 1.5 hours. The same happens when I try to bring up System Properties in
Control Panel (at times, it just will not open, despite my computer
continuing to run correctly). Also, I have lost he System Restore tab from my
system properties so I cannot even turn it off. I am completely baffled.

PC details: Dell Dimension 4550 2.4Ghz with 512MB RAM, running XP
Professional SP2

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I am all of a sudden having the same problem. I have the latest anti-virus
software and virus definitions. I even checked by going to the Symantec site
and had it check my computer for viruses and the result was no viruses. Have
tried doing a repair install of XP and the problem still exists. I am able
to normal things like run Internet apps, e-mail, MSOffice products -- no
problems there. I can't do any Windows updates because they freeze -- I
suspect the system is trying to set a restore point and it can't.

I am also running the latest versions of Symantec security software and clean
of virus/spyware etc.
