Setting specific IP address?

How do you go about setting a specific IP address for a PC using XP?
I see where to do the settings but here are several field to fill in in
addition to the IP..such as:

IP:
Subnet:
Default Gateway:

Preferred DNS server
Alternate DN server

I know what the IP should be, but what about the rest of the fields?

thank you

Hi,

IP you know. Subnet is usually 255.255.255.0. Default gateway is the address
of the internet connection, eg: a router may use 192.168.0.1 for itself.

When you put the IP address in, the subnet will automagically get filled
in. Leave the Gateway blank. As for the DNS servers, get those
addresses from your ISP (assuming you aren't on a domain).
