Setting pointer sensitivity separately for pad and mouse

I use my laptop mostly with the Synaptics touch pad built-in, but sometimes
with a corded or cordless mouse instead (Logitech cordless).

When I plug in the mouse, the pointer moves too fast. If I adjust it to
move slower, I have to adjust it back again when using the pad.

Can I set the pointer speed for the two devices separately? (I don't have
this problem on my work laptop, so it must be possible.)

Would it make a difference if I installed the Logitech software instead of
just relying on plug'n'play?

John

PS I have hp laptop model dv9000ea with Windows XP Media Center Edition, but
the same question applies to another laptop in the house.

I'd probably uninstall the Synaptics support software and just use
Logitech SetPoint 3.10 instead. It just depends on which device
(TP or External) you need the most control/customization.

I have the same question. Here's my description of what I'd like to do, which
I prepared for Sony technical help (the call-taker was unable to understand
my intent, let alone suggest a way to implement it).

I have a vaio VGN-SZ140P running XPpro. It's about six months old. I use the
built-in touchpad and, when the vaio is on my desk, a separate mouse
(Microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse 4000). Both work fine.

I want to be able to specify different pointer speeds for two different
pointing devices--a slower pointer speed for the wireless notebook optical
mouse 4000, and a faster pointer speed for the built-in touchpad.

I can open the "mouse properties" applet and change the pointer speed, no
problem, works great. But the settings I make in this applet affect both
pointing devices.

Note: On the "buttons" tab in that applet there is a drop-down list titled
"connected device." When the applet starts, "wireless notebook optical mouse
4000" is selected whether or not that mouse is connected to the laptop. I
don't see anything like a "touchpad" item in the drop-down "connected device"
list.

My problem: At the moment, every time I take the vaio off my desk I have to
change the pointer speed so I can efficiently use the built-in touchpad, then
change it back when I'm back on my desk using the wireless mouse.

My hope: I'd like to be able to specify a different pointer speed for the
built-in touchpad. At the monent,Is it possble to create separate pointer
speed settings for the two devices and have windows remember and honor them?

Thanks,
Bryan
