I'm trying to set firefox as my default web browser so any clickable
url opens up in firefox but its not working. I go to add/remove
programs, set program access and defaults and choose firefox as
default but it just hangs right after and doesn't respond. Any ideas?

Open FireFox, Tools, Option, General. See section "Default browser". Or, try this question here:

Edit -> Preferences..
Choose Navigator in the left hand column and you will find a button,
for setting Mozilla (firefox) as default.

If you get a prompt from IE to please change back, use Internet
Options, found in the Control Panels.
Click on the Programs tab and make certain the check box for IE to
check if it is default is blank!

I would normally never use that applet. Here's How to
change the default browser.

Make sure that Mozilla has the "Use Mozilla as Default
Browser" checked.

If that doesn't register in windows, Open up Internet
Options and go to 'Programs' - Remove the checkmaark in "IE
should check if it is default". Next time you click on a
URL, click No to default IE option and remove the always
check at bottom of box.

In "Folder Options>file types, make sure the following
have mozilla entered as default open: HTM, HTML, HTTP,
HTTPS, XML, XHTML, SHTML and FTP. If the application is
still IE, you will need to browse to mozilla folder location
and doubleclick on mozilla or firefox, depending on which
you use. In the DDE box under name of application put
mozilla or firefox. After chaging any of those, close the
file types area and close My Computer/Windows Explorer
shell. Restart the System.

Please note that when you do updates to system afterward you
will need to manually launch ie.

In Firefox itself, Tools - Options - General page, check off 'Firefox
should check if it is Default Browser'. Then close it and next time you
load it it will ask - say Yes
