Setting a preferred connection to use on your LAN

Hey guys.

I have a Toshiba laptop with built-in 802.11a/b/g (108mbps capable) and a
D-LINK 802.11a/b/g Access Point on my LAN. I also have the regular 10/100
wired network connection available at my workspace. My problem is that when I
try to copy large(er) files over the network to or from my laptop, Windows XP
Pro wants to use the wireless connection because it is 8mbps faster (108mbps)
than the wired 100mbps LAN connection. But as you know is typical of
wireless, I never see anything close to 108mbps out of my wireless
connection. At best I see about 20-30% usage on the wireless compared to
about 70-80% usage on my wired, which in reality is faster than the wireless.
My question is, is there a way to set the preferred connection to the use the
wired LAN over the wireless when both are connected at the same time? I've
went into the My Network Places Properties>hit the advanced menu>and then
went to the Advanced Settings and changed the Local Area Connection as the
first connection in the list over the Wireless Network Connection but Windows
refuses to use the wired LAN connection first because it's "8mbps slower". Is
there a registry modification or some advanced tab in Windows that I'm
missing to do this?
I understand the priniple of why Windows does this, but there has to be a
way to manually specify which connection I want the OS to use when both
connections are active.

Thanks,

Tavis

sounds like routing order issue. you may want to modify the gateway metric. this page may help.

Thank you very much! I've been in and out of the Advanced TCP/IP settings
using it for other things and completely forgot that the Automatic Metric
selection box was in there.

It's working great! Thanks!
