Set Up Two Computer Network

H

Herbert C Lebovitz

Using Win XP Home
Using cable
Using Linksys Wireless-G router
Desktop wired to router
Laptop wireless to router
Both computers belong to SAME workgroup
How do I set up to show both in each other's network?
How do I set up file sharing within Home ONLY?
As of now both are able to connect to Internet.
Thanks,
Herb

Herb,

Do either have ICF or third party firewall? You gotta disable ICF,
and totally un install any third party firewall (follow instructions
completely and carefully) for file sharing to work.

BTW, was that your actual email address in From:? Learn to munge
properly, to keep yourself a bit safer.

What are you basing this statement on, Chuck? It certainly
isn't true for Zone Alarm and Sygate (free versions) if
configured properly.

Experience.

Start by un installing first. Once file sharing is working, re
install and configure.

Is this unique to wireless? I have two XP systems on a wired network,
one with Zone Alarm, and the other with Sygate, and although I had
problems simply because I forgot to configure them for the file & print
sharing, I did not uninstall either one of them.

I can see the advantage of uninstalling them first so you can eliminate
any possible firewall related problems until you get the file & print
sharing working, but you still have to configure them afterwards, and
it seems like a lot of extra work to me.

I agree. It's a lot of work. Unfortunately, many folks in these
forums have reported problems with file sharing, when ZA or another
personal firewall is present. Neither reconfiguring or disabling will
make it work in many cases.

The best solution, in many cases, is to un install, get file sharing
working, then re install. Wired or wireless.

Herb,

If there is a personal firewall interfering with file sharing, try
file sharing after each step:
1) Disable personal firewall.
2) Re enable firewall, and configure with each computer trusted by
the other.
3) Un install firewall, reboot.

Chuck
