set up network between win xp and win 2000 computers - helpless!

I'm trying to connect a win xp media centre computer and a windows 2000
professional. The xp has an ethernet port connected to a large LAN, and a USB
Belkin ethernet adapter, which i've connected to crossover cable, which is
connected to the ethernet card of the win2000 laptop. I think so far
eveything's right. (??)
The problem is that i've run the networking setup wizard on the XP, so far
so good, but win2000 doesn't support the networking wizard (i created a
floppy and everything). Now i can just about manage to run the wizard, but
now i'm lost... what do i do on the win2000 laptop? I've tried control panel
network and dialup connections > make new connection, but am not sure what

walk me through what to do? ( a 'for dummies' version would be much
appreciated!!!)

In the windows 2000, you should have Local Area Network icon under network and dialup connections. You can setup TCP/IP by opening the Properties the LAN.

Sarah,

Please start by getting the crossover connection working. When that's good, we
can look at Windows Networking. So start with the crossover cable.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the Windows XP computer, and select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

On the Windows 2000 computer, in TCP/IP Properties, select
# Obtain an IP address automatically.
# Obtain DNS server address automatically.
Then verify connectivity between the 2 computers.

You don't need to create a new connection on the Windows 2000
computer, and you don't need to run the Network Setup Wizard.

If possible, connect the Windows 2000 computer directly to the large
LAN, which would eliminate the need for a crossover cable connection
between 2000 and XP. If there isn't a network switch or hub port
available for Windows 2000, you could get a switch, connect it to the
existing LAN port, and connect the Windows XP and 2000 computers to
the switch.

To add the Windows 2000 computer to the large LAN via a crossover
cable connection to the XP computer, create a network bridge on XP
between the Ethernet port and the USB adapter, as shown here:

The default network settings on Windows 2000 should let it join the
existing LAN. If not, configure Windows 2000 the same as the other
computers. That probably means setting TCP/IP to obtain an IP address
automatically.

Setting the Windows 2000 computer's workgroup name the same as the
other computers will make networking them a little easier.

Hi!

Thanks for helping... i'm trying to configure the tcp/ip properties on the
2000 computer like you said, but the only way i know to do that is to go to
control panel, network and dialup connections, and then select the connection
i want to configure. However, there are no connections there, so where do i
go?
