set up a data base in word or excel?

I am trying to set up a data base of names for a mailing list, and then make
it retrievable into a letter format or just envelope addressing. Anyone
with information on how to help me would be greatly appreciated. It has been
years since my college days and learning macros and such.

No macros necessary. Use Excel to store the data: Row 1 is column headings,
row 2 your first record (address), row 3 your second record, etc. Save it,
close it.
Open Word, do a mail merge.

Hello-

IMHO, you'll be far better off to store your list of records in an XL file &
use Word for the docs to merger the record data into.

No-one has mentioned Outlook which is the obvious place to store addresses

That aside, Word can use a variety of data formats, but the most reliable is
to use a Word table.
