You know the split-window view you get when you click "Folders" in Windows
Explorer? I'd like that view to be my dafualt view when opening fodlers or
drives. I know it's possible, but I don't remember how I did it before.

I know how to right-click > Explore, and I know how to make shortcuts to
directories. I don't want that (because one it extra steps, and one doesn't
work very well), I want the default Open view to be the Explore view.

set up a folder the way you want to see it. goto

Tools/Folder Options/View and click "set all folders like current"

i think that might get where you want to be.

That doesn't work. It only affects the view on the right, but it does not
remember the status of the FOlders view.

Edit the shortcut's "Target" to read
%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,E:\
where E:\ is the drive and or directory you wish to expand. (if this is what
you meant)

Note tha Ialready said, "I know how to make shortcuts to directories. I
don't want that because... [it] doesn't woprk very well." And it's a pain to
do for every shortcut, and I don,t always want to make shortcuts, and there
IS a way to make it a default. I have done it. I want to do it again. HOW?

So now we know what you don't want. Try; Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|File
Types|"folder"|Advanced and set the default "Action:" to "explore"

That works for my drives, but not for shortcuts, even new ones. But there's
something familiar about that process you described. Either that's it, but
I'm missing something, or that's most of it.

Why can't I just use one simple window, like another OS uses, to view
directories and files, even files in more than one directory?

When is Windows going to get out of Bet and get a full release? I mean, they
can't rally be satisfied with a program that doesn't even print directories,
can they?

See my earlier reply for the shortcuts.
