Set program access & defaults

In Add or Remove Programs applet, there is an icon, Set program access &
defaults on the left pane. Can someone advise what is it and how to use it.

Every applet has built-in Help. If you open the applet and click the
Help button it will display a summary and links to more detailed
topics. Basically Set Access & Defaults allows users to override
XP's use of Microsoft components for other 3rd-Party vendors.
So if you prefer Opera's browser instead of Internet Explorer, the
Set Access allows you to change the default browser. The ability
to do this was implemented as a part the settlement of the lawsuit
the US Government brought against Microsoft.

To me, it's basically useless, as you can set everything on your own. Let's
say, if you want to have Mozilla Firefox as your default browser, you can do
it in Firefox's Options window. You can also associate specific file types to
other players (like RealPlayer) in their Preferences window.
