Set language later reverts to original language automatically

In Word 2007 on Vista 64-bit, I set the language for text in a paragraph from
English (US) to French or another language. As I continue on, I notice that
spell checker has flagged the foreign words again. I click on that text and
the language has automatically reverted to English (US). It also happens
when I copy and paste the text into another document - the French portion of
the paragraph, for example, reverts to English (US).

Why won't the language I set stay formatted as I want it? 2003 never had
this problem.

Turn off the option to automatically detect the language (in Review tab |
Set Language).
