How is it that Language, Set Language, Portuguese, after I selected a small
part of a document (only about 15 lines so that the program doesn't tell me
that "There are too many errors... etc.)) doesn't recognize the language
(original is in english and I want to translate that document into european
portuguese). Curiously, in the preceding paragraph (much more lines), the
process worked perfectly.
Operatin System is WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL. WORD is WORD 2002 SP3

have you made sure that the option to not check spelling and grammar is NOT
selected for this paragraph?

You could try selecting the paragraph and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar, Ctrl+Q to
remove all directly applied formatting, then try applying the language
formatting again.
