I have 9 programs that can be user to view pictures on my XP machine, and
hundreds of pictures.

How do I set the program that is used by default to view a picture that I
click on an image file in a folder?

(The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is the desired one.
Also, I know I can assign them picture by picture using right click,
but that would be _very_ time consuming.)

Thanks,
E-Jo

Right click on an image file and look for 'open with' then look for
the prog you wish to use. when it opens it should give you the option
(a little tick box) to make that prog default for that kind of file.

Thanks for the response, Paul, but I didn't see any tick box. I also did a
search
for 'default' within the Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer, but no joy.

I have a number of pictures in a folder that have the jpg extension and have
a type of Image Expert Picture.
If I right click a picture and select Open With, then pick Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer it brings the picture up in that format. But if I then close
the picture and double click it to bring it up again, it comes up in the
Image Expert 2000 format (which I don't want.)

So how do I set the default to what I want? (BTW, it was that way once.)
Thanks,
E-Jo

Go into the program that opens your pictures now and deselect all the file
types. When you try to open a picture again, Windows Picture and Fax viewer
will open everything.

Well, I did find that when the Image Expert 2000 display does come up,
if I select Tools/Options then the File Formats tab, there is a box
labeled:
Use Image Expert 2000 as the default viewer for JPG files.
And I unchecked that, which seems to work so far.

I haven't tried all the other candidates, but maybe I'm on the right track?

Thanks,
E-Jo

Open My computer, Choose Tools, Folder Options, File Types. Scroll down
to the file type you want to change, jpg for example. Click the change
button. Scroll to Windows picture and Fax Viewer, highlight that and
put a tick mark in the box below, "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file". Ok your way out. Repeat for any other file
types you want to change.

Another option is to right click the file and choose preview. That
should open it in the Picture and Fax Viewer no matter what is set as
the default program to open that image.

As far as I know, file types can only be associated with one program at a
time. I could be wrong, though.

To set that as default, Start - Run and run the line
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
