set associations

I can't open some e-mails and get that message that I have to go into set
associations to set up an association. Not only do I not know how (the help
button is no help) I don't know what it means. I have Windows Vista and
haven't changed anything since getting it.
 
It's a confusing error message. "Set associations" is part of the
Default Programs applet. You can get to Default Programs via
the Start menu or the Control Panel.
