Services.exe Running CPU at 99%

Hi everyone,

I have recently been having problems with a device driver, trying to fix the
problem I have created a BIGGER one!

On reboot it prompted me to restart normally etc.... I chose to restart with
last good known configeration. Since then my computer will not run.

It starts up and now services.exe is running my CPU at 99% thus not allowing
anything else to work... I have searched, and searched to no avail....

I attempted to start up in safe mode and it runs even slower..

I am running windows XP with SP2, if anyone can help me in anyway it would
be greatly appreciated....

Thanks in advance
Cheers Amanda

Youre best bet is to follow instructions in kb310560 A call to microsoft
would
get the same results....

Access the Administrator ( not your usual Log On ) in Safe Mode.
Access System Restore and restore using a restore point from before
the problem first arose. Further advice in link:
http://bertk.mvps.org/

Your problem may be specific to your User Profile.

This KB article may help.
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/811151

Access the Administrator ( not your usual Log On ) in Safe Mode and
create a new User Profile for yourself. Leave moving data from your
old profile for now i.e. until you know you can stop servicesexe from
running continuously. You should use the Administrator only to make
changes to other User Profiles including any having the powers /
rights of an
Administrator.

Restart the computer and use your new log on. If no 100% CPU usage run
a full anti-virus scan and whatever anti-spyware software is installed
updating definitions first. If 100% CPU usage occurs on start up
Shutdown. Disconnect al peripheral devices, except mouse, keyboard and
monitor and reboot to Safe Mode.

Please let me know what results you get.

What was the original driver giving you problems?

Hope this helps.

Hi again,

Sorry I didn't add what I thought the original problem was....

I think it was a D Link Airbus wireless adaptor ? Not sure though, my laptop
for some reason stopped hybernating and the computer would crash.... I read a
little but didn't really read enough.... One the last crash I chose to start
with last good known configeration ??? Bad Choice....

I am assuming not sure though, time for some TLC for my laptop :) No doubt
I will get to the bottom if it.....Thanks again

Your posts have me a little confused. It is obvious that you have
followed the advice in KB310560. Safe mode is not mentioned in that
Article so I am unclear why you chose this boot option. System Restore
would appear to have undone what caused the high CPU usage.

I do not know whether malware caused the high CPU usage. Have you
updated AVG to version 7.5? Run your scans. What firewall are you
using? Have you considered using Windows Defender and having it
running in Real Protection mode?
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

I am not sure what affect System Restore has on Event Viewer logs. You
might get a clue by looking in the System and Application logs for
Error / Warning Reports prior to you using System Restore. Please post
copies so that we can see if there are any clues.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

What is your computer make and model? Any model number for the D Link
Airbus?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for your response, All systems ago again Yeah Me !!!

For other users that may run into the same dilema here is what I did....

I backed up my data very slowly, through a home network onto another
computer.

I ran msconfig and changed my start up to run in safe mode...

I was prompted on that start up to either continue or do a system restore,
I
clicked on System Restore...... All up it took around 2hrs to complete,
but
it all seems to be running ok so far....

I have AVG & Spybot, can you recommend anything else, that would prevent
the
situation arrising again :)

Many thanks for your response....

Grab a copy of Prevx1.

http://info.prevx.com/downloadremove.asp?determination=G

This gives you a free 1 months trial and it will zap all nasties. It runs
fine alongside other Virus and Spyware software you may have running in
active or passive mode.

It has save a couple of malware riddled computers that friends have asked me
to fix. I would not be without it now and they do a family deal for 4
licences, that makes this a cheap and effective solution.

Why pay when freeware options are available for the home user which do
the job. Protection from malware is achieved by taking a number of
preventative measures. It is the combination not any single component
that keeps malware at bay.

I agree, free is fine and a broad spectrum approach is the way to go, BUT
most Free ones are well below their paid versions in effectiveness. And
note I said the Prevx1 gives you a free and unfettered one month trial. And
it works ALONGSIDE what else you have. Trust me it is good and I have paid
to put it on 6 computers. Grab a copy and run it on your clean system and
see what it shows. Not false positives either and it has an "always
on-line" approach to scanning, that seems unique. It cleans up viruses,
trojans as well as spyware stuff.

There are countless providers of anti-virus, anti-spyware and internet
security products, who all make the same claim. The two most widely
used destroy system performance and one of them is a nightmare to
remove. No single anti-spyware programme has all the answers. The
product you are promoting is one I have never heard of previously. I
do not have a malware problem and never have had one. My measures work
well for me. That is all I need.
