services.exe hangs system-need help

Caleb Lawrence

Under Win 2K, when I change my internet connection method LAN/Modem/wireless
modem the system hangs and returns error messages.

7011-Timeout waiting for DNSCache Service
7011-Timeout waiting for Messenger Service
7011-Timeout waiting for DM Server Service

and sometimes

7022-DNS Client hung on starting.

Services.exe also hits 95+% CPU time, this occures as the modem tries to
register itself with Cruzio.

Microsoft say install latest service pack-I have.

Any ideas?

Thanks Caleb

Hi Caleb,
I need to get a better understanding of is happening.
You stated the following occurs when changing the connection method in
Internet Explorer correct?
7011-Timeout waiting for DNSCache Service
7011-Timeout waiting for Messenger Service
7011-Timeout waiting for DM Server Service

Is this after a reboot of the system? These services should already be
started and changing the connection time in IE should not have any bearing
on these services if the system is already up.
You also state that this happens when the modem is registering itself with
Cruzio? I'm assuming that Cruzio is your ISP dial up connection. Does
this connection use a Normal Dial Up network connnection or does it use a
customer Connection that is created by Cruzio? What type of modem are you
using on the system?

My main concern are the error message listed above, please give more
detials. These services come online when the system is started so I don't
understand how you would get these error messages from flipping the
connection type in IE.

Thank you,

Thanks for the response.

These errors occur at bootup and when changing connection types. You can
see the event viewer register the times on these errors and they occur a few
seconds (about 20, after network connection) and continue in repetition for
5 or so times covering about 3 minutes.

Generally I use my DSL modem (Wirespeed, had it for years never any
trouble). Standard Modem is an LT Win Modem (I know these are not the best
but that's what Dell installed on the Laptop, Inspiron 5000e W/Win2k.)
Finally there is my wireless modem through Verizon. It is a SusTeen Mobile
Modem. The DSL modem almost always works just fine, when I try to switch to
the other connections that's when the system hangs.

I consider myself quite computer savvy, MS says that service pack 4 fixes
the problem-it doesn't. Desktop computer uses the same network and
occasionally I use its modem (US Robotics) and never have a problem.

I can repeat these errors at will, consistently. Ultimately the system does
recover and it works-takes about 5-7 minutes.
