service terminated unexpectedly - can't logon

R

Russ Kinch

I have a windows 2000 server and about 30 stations, 10 or
so of which are Windows XP Pro that are members of the
domain. Several of the Windows XP stations experience
intermittant problems logging on and/or finding their
roaming profiles. The event viewer states that several of
the services have terminated unexpectedly, such as
workstation, windows time, server, computer browser, etc.
There is never a reason why they terminated and of course
the user can't log on to the network as a result. This
doesn't happpen to any of my other networks that I know
of. The server never indicates any kind of problem,
although the workstation sometimes says that there is no
domain controller available to validate the logon (even
though other stations can logon fine).

Rebooting, sometimes several times will usually correct
the problem. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have
copied the event log entries below.

You are definately having communications issues between 2k
and XP.

There was a SMB issue with XP that I saw at some point
that was similar and I understand there is a fix for it.

I would do a windows update on all of your XP boxes and
look for anything related to SMB fixes.
