Service Pak 2 install problem

I'm trying to install Windows XP service pack 2 but after
getting through backing up the registry and starting
the "creating restore point" it says "unable to read or
write to the database" and shuts down.

I've turned off all running start programs and turned off
my anti-virus software.

Any suggestions?
