I am a total XP novice and confused by Microsoft's unclear
documentation. Does the 'Version 2002' in 'Windows XP Home
Edition Version 2002' which my laptop runs mean anything?
Does it mean, specifically, that the fixes in Service Pack
1 have been pre-installed or not? Or do I have to install
Service Pack 1 (or rather Service Pack 1a) myself?

Any advice gratefully received.

Windows XP is version 2002 with or without Service Pack 1. Once you install
SP1 it will be "Windows XP Version 2002 Service Pack 1"

Hi!
you can easily check whether SR.Pack has been installed or not.
Press [Windows logo key + Break]> Under System Properties you will find
whether there is any mention of Service pack or not.
