Greetings,

I am preparing to distribute a database application that uses a runtime
version of MS Access 2003. For this applicaton to install on either Win2000
or WinXP OS machines, Service Pack 4 (Win2k) or Service Pack 1 (WinXP) and
Service Pack 8 (MS Access Jet) must minimally be installed as part of the
respective OS and runtime prerequisites for each machine application is
installed to.

For users who do not meet the minium service pack levels, am I permited to
distribute the respective OS service packs as part of my distribution?

Or is it recommended that I reference the respective service pack location
for download and installation?

Thank you.

Difficult question to answer. If you are obviously the IT
manager and all of the installations to which the application
is going are under the control of the organization, then the
answer is yes. On the other hand, if the machines belong to
or under the control of their individual users, then the only
option is to advise them of the system requirements to run the
Access application and runtime version.

Do you want to take responsibility for a service pack install that might
completely corrupt the user's machine? Leave that crap to MickeyMouse.
Although they probably won't take responsibility, at least you can blame
the folks that provide the SP.

Thank you.

I think it is best if I only specifiy the minimum OS specification and
provide a general link to that effect for SP download and installation.
With my installation program, I believe I can specify to check for the
correct OS and SP level to present a message if the minimum is not present.

Contacting Microsoft:

I will only be able to provide information for end users, not within my
organization, as to where and how they can obtain the correct service pack
level. I am not able to distribute a service pack with purchased software.
