Windows XP Service pack 3

Help please
I recently downloaded service pack 3 with no problems, I was then instructed to restart, when I did I got the following message:
STOP: 0x000000FC (0xBA5078E8, 0x0AA2C963, 0xBA507848, 0x00000001
As its a dell 9200 Dimension I was able to revert back to original settings, however I lost some treasured photos.
Has any one any ideas to prevent this again, apart from back up the photos!!
