Service Pack 3

My computer has gone very, very slow. There are no viruses, trojans, etc, as
I've done extensive checks. Assuming that soemwhere along the line the
Operating System got corrupted, does the installation of Service Pack 3
restore verything in the OS to what it should be?

Thanks

Exactly what have you checked with?

In fact, infection with malware (either a virus, word, trojan,
spyware, or adware) is among the most likely possibilities when you
see a sudden slowdown.

Highly unlikely. That would be far more likely to cause a much more
serious problem than a slowdown.

No. And if in fact you are infected, installing a service pack may
well make the situation worse.

there are many reasons
that would slow down
a system, not only
malwares.

if your system is slow
in normal mode, then
you might want to see
if it is also slow or not
in safemode.

in doing so, it may
ascertain a clue.

Have you used both anti virus and malware (SpyBot for example) programs that
have current definitions updated to scan your drive?

Did you install anything just prior to the slow down?

Have you tried a system restore?

I am sure the computer is clean. I've done a million checks and got pretty
good over the years. The computer is very, very slow though. It's not that
old and I am assuming it's not old age. So, I'd like to try a few tricks to
do with the OS before I give up and get a new model!

I thought upgrading it to SP3 might help, but it has not.

Any ideas? Defrag next.

Check to make sure the hard drive isn't in PIO mode. MVP Hans-Georg Michna
has the explanation and a fix here: http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10

Also I would test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from
the hard drive mftr.'s website.

This may not be a software issue at all.
