Service Pack 2

I've just tried to install XP SP2. It immediately
bombed out, telling me I need 600Mb free disk space. I
looked into this further, and one MS web page suggested I
need 1.8Gb free disk space.

I only have 219Mb free on the partition where XP is
installed, but on another partition on the disk I have
8.57Gb free.

Will XP really take up an *extra* 600Mb - 1.8Gb? I
suspect not. I assume the SP2 CD is expanded on to the
hard disk before files are copied into place. I tried
changing the TEMP and TMP entries in the registry to
point to the larger disk, but to no avail. Does anyone
know a workaround for this problem?

Get a larger drive?.. use Partition Magic or BootItNG to make the primary
partition larger?.. SP2 is a MAJOR update..

Hi

Are you installing SP2 using the full SP2 installation
file (266 MB)?

This one is relevant for a cleanup before installing SP2 as well:

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=#[email protected]

(also note that having System Restore turned off while installing
SP2 will reduce the space SP2 needs during installation with a lot)

Also, if you have a ServicePackFiles folder (from a SP1 installation),
move the folder to your other partition. If the SP2 installation
succeeds, you can just delete it afterward (SP2 will create it's
own ServicePackFiles folder).
