Service Pack 2 Will not install

Hi, i just recently upgraded my motherboard. Upon reboot I had to repair my
WinXP Prof setup using my original WinXP Prof CD. My CD only contains
Service Pack 1. When I try to install Service Pack 2 via Microsoft Update
Site or the downloadable file I receive an error message stating the
"smss.exe is in use by another application. Close all applications. Click
retry or cancel."

Does anyone know what would cause this?

IMO, the best option is to create a slipstreamed CD (SP2 integration) and
then run a clean install.

Why?
Possibly the OP is interested in the security of the computer.
Also some updates require SP-2.
A growing # of programs require SP-2.
There are other reasons, but that is more than enough for most.
Generally most Windows XP computers need SP-2.

SP-2 installation and use is usually uneventful for those with computers
ready for SP-2:
