Service Pack 2 = very slow operation?

Since service pack 2 was downloaded, most of my programs
run very slowly...internet activity absolutely crawls (30-
40 seconds to open every page)....even the boot is very
slow. Also, my ISP dial-up keeps trying to dial a
connection (every few seconds)- even though I'm on DSL
and indicated "never dial a connection!" grrrr I
disabled the firewall (because I already had
Norton)...what can I do to restore speed to the system
and stop the dial-up from constantly trying to dial?

Addressing the dial-up modem issue, do this:
Control Panel
Printers and Other Hardware
Phone and Modem Options
Modems Tab
Properties
(Brand Name) Modem Properties
General Tab
Device Usage
Drop down menu, select "Do not use this device (disable)."
OK
