I have a Microsft wireless base station that runs the
Broadband Utility program, on my XP-home pc. After
downloading and installing the infamous SP2, I now get an
error message when I try to open the broadband Utility,
advising that my current version is not compatible with
the current version of windows. My wireless network still
works, but I am in a state of limbo, I suspect that if I
download SP2 on one of the wireless receiving computers in
my house that it will no longer receive my wireless signal
from the base-station until I rectify the problem. I also
suspect I cannot add any pc's to my wireless network until
this is fixed, since I cannot access the encrypted
password from my base-station software! There does not
appear to be any documentation on this problem in the
Microsoft website. Can anyone help?

Andy,

first thing I'd try is to uninstall the third party broadband
utility. Probably you don't even need it.

For more information please have a look at

It is not a third-party utility, it came with the
Microsoft base-station. And without it, I have no way of
maintaining the passwords to keep my wireless network
secure!

Andy,

have you checked whether there is an updated version of that
program available for download? I mean, if it already complains
that it is obsolete, why not update it?

Hans-Georg

Andy, you can manually download the update from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/broadbandnetworking/10_DLoadMain.mspx

Check the 'readme' file first on that site. This update provides
compatibility for SP2 as well as other items.

Further, once you have SP2 you no longer really need the utility program
(nor want it, except for wired or non-XP connections) but should use the
Wireless Zero Configuration service to configure your wireless cards.
Go to Start, Run, 'services.msc', OK, go down the list and make sure the
service is started and is set to start automatically.

Fred,

I recommended that yesterday already, but Andy didn't want to do
that because the software came from Microsoft.

Ah, ok ... well then, I guess there's not much more one can do to help.
The MS update provides the answer to his problem, but ...

Fred,

well, it's understandable. One would think that Microsoft
software would work together with a Microsoft operating system.

On the other hand, the software is made to run on several
different operating systems, Windows 95, Windows 98, ...

Andy, if you read this, I think it would still be worth a try to
uninstall the configuration software, even if it comes from
Microsoft.

At least that's one possibility. If it doesn't help, you can
still reinstall it if you like.
