we installed service pack 2 about a week ago, and since then, we've had
problems. my husband's e-mail completely disappeared. we've started getting
pop-ups and spy ware again, which we haven't had for months. every time we
start up the computer, mysterious error messages show up and there are
unknown icons on our desktops. and don't even get me started on the very
slow speed of the computer now. it's running at a snail's pace.

is it possible to uninstall service pack 2 and get our computer back to the
way it was before we installed this mistake?

Service Pack 2 isn't the problem. You have spyware and possibly viruses on
the computer.

So then it's just a coincidence that the day we installed Service Pack 2, we
just started having trouble? I've asked others who have installed Service
Pack 2 and they all said they had computer troubles to varying degrees after
installing it.

What would you advise?

Computers are unduly affected after the installation of SP2 by the garbage
that a user may have wittingly/unwittingly installed at some point.. SP2,
while being primarily a security update, is not a scumware/spyware remover
or anti-virus program.. MS assume, and rightly so, that a computer user will
take action using available third party software that eliminates the
constantly growing and changing scumware/spyware/virus/trojan attacks..

After installing Service Pack 2, I had some serious problems with Internet
access.. However, it wasn't nearly as bad as when I tried to do a system
restore to back out of the service pack. That caused a fatal error and I had
to reinstall XP from scratch. Now Microsoft Works and a bunch of other
Microsoft applications aren't working. I thought I could reinstall from the
XP cd, but Works wasn't on it. What do I do, short of paying for a new
version of Works? Is there any way to recover these applications?.

We need to know a little more.. what make is your computer?.. what OS was
installed when you bought it?.. did the original installation include MS
Works?,, what CDs were supplied, if any, at the time of purchase?..

If your machine is a Dell or similar, you should contact the manufacturer
and ask if they can supply the original software package as you have had to
do a complete re-install over the old one.. the installation material may be
contained in a hidden partition on your drive.. again, you must contact the
manufacturer and ask how to access it..

Try this route, and report back to this same thread..

Re. SP2.. if you have just done a re-install of the OS, now would be a good
time to try SP2 again.. work out the connection problems if they are still
present without uninstalling SP2, and then go from there.. good luck..
