When limited users long in, they receive two errors in
succession:
1. Tile title: SCMan. "Access is denied."
2. Tile title: SCMan. "Can't Open Service Control
Manager."

These errors do not occur for the administrator log in.
These are nuisance errors as they don't appear to effect
further operation.

How can I get rid of these nuisance errors?

THANKS for your thoughts/ideas.

Dear Bob,

I suspect that there may be a driver compatibility or permissions issue. I
recommend you perform Clean-boot troubleshooting to isolate the cause. One
thing to check first is your System event log. Look for clues about a
service or driver failing to load.

You were correct. It took some time, but here's what I
discovered.

The offensive file was related to an Asus video driver I
loaded several weeks ago. I had loaded an MS game (Star
Wars Knights of the Old Republic) which required an
updated video driver for my video card (NVIDIA GeForce3
Ti500). At some point while trying out new drivers the
issue must have started.

The offensive file was "anvshell.exe", a startup program
(found through clean booting repeatedly till trial and
error eliminated everything else) and was found in the
C:\Windows directory. It was being launched via the
Registry (I think)
under "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
.. Further info on the file showed that its version
number listed was 1.0.0.1 and that it was created July
24, 2003 at 15:19:16. Deleting the file fixed the
problem and I've had no issues since (appears to have
reverted to a previous/correct driver) and the game still
works fine.

If you have any pull with MS, may I suggest that this
driver be investigated for compatibility with XP ... I'm
pretty sure I didn't load anything that didn't have the
recommended testing, though I may be mistaken.

THANK YOU for your help in eliminating this nuisance.

Respectfully, Bob
