Dee,
I'm not sure if anyone replied to you - I just got on and saw your message
and have the same exact thing and am ready to pull my hair out! I just
got a
new computer and was researching the storage the computer had and
honestly,
had absolutely no idea what Windows Vista/Mail is. WHY DID THE STORE SELL
ME
THE DUMB THING?!?!?!?!?!
I have no idea how to get my e-mail back
from
Outlook Expresss. I just want to e-mail - not out to change the world -
just
e-mail! Can anyone help???
Sure. Windows mail can import your Outlook Express mail, if it has access
to all of the files in the OE mail store folder. Tthe addresses are a
completely separate thing, in the Windows Address Book WAB file.
Go to your XP system, open OE, go to Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store
Folder, and the full path to the mail files will be displayed. Highlight
that, copy (control+C) and paste it (control+V) into the little box after
clicking Start, Run, and the folder will open. You'll need to close OE to
copy the files, but before you do, open the address book from OE, and go to
Help, About. The path to the address book is there, and you can do the
same thing to open the folder, or you can export the addresses to a new
address book somewhere you can find.
Finally, go to Tools, Accounts, Mail, and choose Export. Export the mail
account settings to an IAF file somewhere you can find (like the folder
where you put the Close OE.
Note that WAB folders are thrown away when you move or export the address
book. Groups are kept, folders are not.
Now, you can simply copy the complete contents of the OE folder to CD, DVD,
USB drive or network location. Move that to the Vista system, and tell
Windows Mail to import. Start with importing the IAF file; don't use File,
Import for this. Use Tools, Accounts, and click Import. Tell it where the
IAF file is. Done in seconds.
For the mail itself, use File, Import, Mail Messages, Outlook Express, Store
Directory, and point it to where you have the files. Note that if it's on
CD or DVD, you have to copy them to the hard disk first as the import needs
to have read/write access, and it can't get that with an optical disk.
Use the same type of process for the contacts.
