Server service missing!!

A

I was checking my computer recently (Win2K Pro Workstation, SP4) and
noticed that there is no Server entry under Services. Even more, the
LanManServer and Srv keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet
\Services are both missing! I'm not certain if the Srv key is needed or
not.

Does anybody know how it could have been deleted or not even originally
installed? Any ideas on how to restore it?

I used another computer as a guide and recreated the keys and data. When
I try to start it, I get a file not found error. Any ideas on a list of
what files or entries I also need to check?

I do have several backups, and there is an old registry backup that I
might be able to extract a few keys from if needed.

You can re-install the Workstation and Server Service by reinstall the
Client for MS Networks, and File and Printer Sharing. Doing this will reset
all the values in the registry and correct the files. The only time I have
ever seen this removed was either in error or in a malicious manner (bad
employee) or something along those lines.

I'm still not certain how it disappeared. By using another computer and
my own Workstation service as guides, I was able to recreate the key and
get it working.

Great, I have had to do that in the past as well. :)
