"server not found"

Like soooo many, I'm having problems since IE6sp1 came to live with me. I've
done all the usual fixes, including all I've found here, but I still have
the "page cannot be displayed, server not found" headache. But I've
discovered that if I click on the "detect network settings" link on that DNS
error page, it usually will get to the site I'm looking for. Maybe a couple
of "refresh" attempts to get it all proper, but then I'm good as long as I
stay within that site. But if I open a new window looking for something
else, it all has to be repeated. Kind of takes the speed out of broadband.
So this must be a clue. The really weird thing is that every once in a
while, I open my browser, and everything works just fine.
Other relevant facts are that although they won't admit it, I know Road
Runner(time Warner cable) is having problems. There are enough cable monkeys
running around to tell that tale. And about half the time, I have trouble
connecting to my mail and news servers. Those are both Outlook clients, so
it ain't just the IE. And lastly, I'm running Win98se, and although MS says
IE6 is compatible, I've got my doubts.
Hope this helps someone having similar problems, would be delighted if
someone knew the answer.
thanks

Hi rcoleman8:- 0 :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download, install and run LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Also, download, install and run WinsockFix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

Instead of doing that try using ping -n 1 to verify that your DNS knows
about that site. You don't care if the ping request gets a response,
just that the ping request shows the name has resolved to an IP address.

If that works but the IE request still does not you may have to add an
entry to your HOSTS file to accelerate that lookup. However, pay
close attention to your Status bar because there may be an immediate
redirect to a different server name and it may be that name which you
could be checking the lookup for instead.

An alternative to ping could be to test the URL with another browser
or to test the server with a telnet client. You may be able to use
HyperTerminal's Winsock connection to substitute for your OS lack
of a command line telnet client.

Post a sample link if you need more help.

Good luck

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/cwshredder.zip
**Post your HijackThis log to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the Spyware forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.
