Server Lisensing

Rory

Hi,

I have a client who wants me to work on their network.
When I look at Lisensing from Admin tools on the DC it
seems their Windows 2000 Server and exchange server are
unlisensed. I asked one employee and she thinks they
purcased 2K server w/ 40 CALS and exchange w/ 40 CALS at
some point. I am not sure if this is just a
configuration issue or if it is really unlisensed usage.

I have not really dealt with this before. Can someone
tell me if they are lisensed why the lisensing funtion
says they are not, or how to tell, or how to configure
this properly?

This is what I see from the Product view tab in Lisensing:

Product seat purch seat allocate svr purch Svr reached

Exch 0 200 0 varies 5-25

Win Svr 0 120 0 varies 5-25

This is what I see in the clients (per seat tab):

user name Lisense use unlisense use product

user 1 0 2 Exch, Win Svr
user 2 0 1 Exch
user 3 0 2 Exch
user 4 0 2 Exch, Win Svr
etc, etc etc etc

I also see repeated lisensing errors in the logs. This is
what alerted me to begin with.

This is a small 2k domain with about 15 local users and
then about 40 small remote locations that are running
workgroups but still access this main DC for mail only.

Thanks

Rory

Rory,

The license manager in Windows 2000 is simply an administrative tool to help
you keep track of your license usage. It does not actually enforce
anything. The only way to make sure that you are in compliance is to look
at the licenses that you have purchased on paper. you ever get audited,
they will only want to see your paper licenses to determine if you are legit
or not. When people have problems with their license manager, we normally
recommend that they just stop and disable the service and keep track of
their license usage on their own, especially when they have a small
environment such as yours.

Please do whatever you can to track down the paper licenses. Then you can
try and reset the license manager back to 0 and start over. If that does
not work, just stop and disable the service and keep track of your usage on
your own.

Here is a KB article that explains how to reset your license manager:
153140 How to Reset License Manager Information
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=153140

I hope this helps.
