Server Extensions - Downside?

I see there are many things FP03 can do if FP02 server
extensions are installed.

So what are the Disadvantages of having the FP02
extensions installed while you're using FP03?

Dynamic Web Templates don't propagate automatically.

For things like corporate portal sites, Windows
SharePoint Services is superior.

Probably the greatest disadvantage is the propensity for
designers, at the slightest sign of trouble, to try
and "go around" the extensions. By doing so, they make
matters worse. So, if you're going to use the extensions
(and I recommend you do), consider it a commitment. If
Publishing won't work, fix it; don't go around it.
And are there any advantages to being hosted on a
Windows server (or Windows Server 2003) instead of a
Unix server?

The FrontPage database features only work on Windows
servers.

Also, let's face it, Microsoft Windows is the prefered
and best-supported platform for Microsoft FrontPage.

I also believe that ASP and especially ASP.NET are world
ahead of PHP or J2EE. That, however, is more a matter of
opinion.

Jim:

BTW: Just bought your FP03 book.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, I should go ahead and use the FP 02
extensions with FP03 and on a Windows server too.

Any difference which version of Windows Server?

none?? because there are no "2003" server extensions - no further functionality
in FP 2003 requires server extensions beyond 2002,.

Most of the server extension functionality requires windows hosting, limited on
Unix/Linux.

Incorrect

FP 2003 also supports WSS on Windows 2003 Server as an alternative to the FP SE

Yes. That's the configuration I run myself.

As a Web developer, you'd notice very little difference between
Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. But if you have a choice,
I'd certainly recommend Windows Server 2003. It's more stable,
faster, more secure, and it saves you an upgrade later.
