Server execution failed... network doesn't work

jeffreyj

I get the "Server execution failed. Connection status: unknown"
message when I roll over the network icon in the status bar. In
addition, I cannot open the Network window in the start menu. When I
try to open it, the computer hangs for several minutes, then opens up
an empty window.

I've tried searching around on the internet, but the solutions I found
didn't work.

The error message started a few months ago. I never cared much,
because although I got the message, my internet worked. I was able to
connect to my home network, but not change networks. But now, I am
unable to connect even to my home network. I have Windows Vista Home
Premium.

This seems to be a somewhat common problem, but I don't know how to
fix it. I have not installed/deinstalled anything in the last few
days, so I don't think any software caused this problem.

Does somebody have a solution? Thanks.

The administrator may need to be added to the local service. These posts may
help. Please post back with the result.

I am unable to add administrator to Local Service
I get a "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied."

I have tried a few other solutions I found online, like system restore
(didn't go far enough back) and enabling User Access Control (didn't
fix anything).

You may run safe mode to do so. Check this post and post back with the
result.

Question: Arent you actually adding the local service account to the
administrators
group on the local machine ? This seemed to work for me, but does not seem
like it should be necessary. I do not have this problem on other machines,
and 'local service' is not part of the admin group (unless I cant view it).
