Server Application, source file, or item can't be found

Hi all.

I have a client using PowerPoint 2003 with an embedded Excel spreadsheet.
When he double-clicks the spreadsheet, he gets the following error.

"Microsoft Office PowerPoint can't start the application required to open
this object. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning
properly. Would you like to repair the feature now?"

When he clicks Yes, the installer comes up and says it's repairing, but then
the following window comes up.

"The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an
unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application."

I've checked the KB, and found all kinds of solutions for OrgChart, but
nothing that relates to Excel objects. Some suggestions spoke of disabling
AV plugins, which I'm going to check for. We use ETrust, and I think it does
have some sort of Office plugin, but I thought I'd post my query here and see
if anyone else has any ideas.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd start with disabling the antivirus app's Office plug-in, yeah.

Can't edit Org Chart, Graph, Excel (error msg: "server application, source
file, or item can't be found")
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00236.htm

You might also try re-registering MSGraph, as explained in that FAQ link.
(It's not been updated to include 2003, but it would be worth a shot.)

Long path lengths are also implicated there.

Hi Echo.

I've tried all the fixes except for the AV Office Plugin fix. We use
ETrust, and CA's web site is being its usual (NOT!) helpful self! Does
anyone know what the Office plugin for ETrust might be called? Any other
ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks.

Not sure, but maybe this is worth a shot:

(see the last post)

I don't know about etrust specifically, though. Does it help to completely
disable it? (temporarily, as a test)
