seriously bad? please help!

hi, i have been having some bad troubles lately...
i have been trying to install windows xp on my comp, and
it just wont work... i have tried many times, but i keep
getting a general protection fault when trying to load xp
setup off the professional disk.
I used to have 98 se on this comp, but i have formatted
to try to install xp, but this is just not working! i
have tried fixboot and fixmbr, but nothing works...

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Are you sure your pc is hardware able ? Have you checked
memory ?
