Serious problems after installing update

After I installed the last critical update for IE, I have
had nothing but problems. After I rebooted after
installing the update I couldn't open a browser, when I
task managered and looked at processes IE was using 99%.
I called Microsoft and after 3 hours on the phone we
deleted some programs from the start menu and I was able
to open a browser. However since then my pc is hosed.
Programs terminate for no reason, I get a virtual memory
error regarding the paging file size. My Favorites are
now all system files, no internet links! Any ideas?? I
really don't want to have to reformat my machine!

I have installed all updates with no problems occuring. MS
updates are rigorously tested on XP software and even
popular 3rd party software before we ever see them. You
may have a browser hijacker or spyware or virus on your
system that is causing the conflict. I would suggest
downloading spybot and adaware, updating them, configure
them, run them. Also, scan for viruses/ trojans, online if
you need to. Make sure you have the latest version of IE
and the update is compatible with that version. Lastly,
you need to be fairly sure the update is a genuine
microsoft update that can be found at:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

sounds like you got the w32 welchia worm, i got it last week while down loading updates.

I have current virus software, have the latest version of
IE and I run Ad-Aware on a regular basis :-) I will run
Spybot, forgot about that one
I just did a System Restore to the day prior to the update
and now everything is fine but of course Windows wants me
to install the update again.
Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the help!
