Serious problem with mshtml.dll add-on... IE will not work

I'm not completely sure how this happened but, I am getting these items when
I launch IE.

First screen:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem with an add-on and needs to
close.

The following add-on was running when this problem occurred:

File: mshtml.dll
Company Name: Microsoft Corporation
Description: Microsoft (R) HTML Viewer"

When I click 'Continue':

"SysFader: iexplore.exe - Application Error

The exception unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) occurred in the
application at location 0x7d508aa2.

Click on OK to terminate the program."

I have no spyware installed (did scan with 3 apps). I use apps such as Xfire
(msnger for gamers) that use the html renderer - so now that this is 'broken'
in IE somehow, Xfire also crashes.

I also tried reinstalling IE with the iesetup.exe, but it told me I already
have a newer version so the install could not continue.

I would really not prefer to format and reinstall Windows at this time. I
don't how to fix this. But if the IE7 beta comes out sometime soon I could
try installing that, maybe it would work.

Strangely enough, the IE-based Maxthon browser still works, which I am using
right now.

Please can someone help me out?

Thank you.

If you would like to get some more conventional crash diagnostics
activate drwtsn32. E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

drwtsn32.exe -i

It appears that your crash is occurring in mshtml.dll (e.g. assuming that module
is loaded at 0x7D4A0000)

Have you also disabled error reporting? Press Win-Break and open the
Error Reporting dialog (via the System Properties Advanced tab)

You should be seeing a more detailed message which gives you more information
about your crash, including the names and versions of the modules involved.
(FYI You have to click on a link in the Error Reporting Tool to see this more detailed
report. Unfortuntately there is no menu support for capturing the detail from the message
window.)

Strangely enough, the IE-based Maxthon browser still works, which I am using
right now.

My guess is that you may find that you have a newer version of mshtml.dll as a result
of a patch and your other program is now incompatible with it. In that case you should
approach the manufacturer of the other product for support or stop using it until such
dependencies have been avoided.

Good luck
