Serious Problem With Mouse

E

Ed O'Brien

I am running XP Home SP2. Recently my mouse (Microsoft Basic Optical)
completely vanished. There was nowhere I could find it in Device Manager. I
tried reinstalling the driver (MS Intellipoint) but could not as I am asked
to uninstall the old version first which cannot be found. On checking
Device Manager, the USB port in which the mouse is plugged shows "Unknown
Device" and when I use the PS/2 connector, this does not work either. I have
tried a restore point without effect and run sfc /scannow with similar
results. The mouse does show in Control Panel, but serves no purpose. I
have also tried and alternative mouse.

Finally, in desparation, I clean installed the lot - took nearly 2 days -
and all was fine. For about a week, that is. Now the mouse has disappeared
again.

The situation is now really serious as I can't afford to be reinstalling
everything each time my mouse goes walkabout.

Is there a way to manually find and uninstall the old driver? Can anyone
help me with this?

TIA

Try the mice on another PC. If they work, it looks as if your
motherboard is faulty.

Try updating the BIOS with the latest file from the motherboard
manufacturer's site, followed by replacing the board.

Good advice all round, gentlemen. Many thanks. I'll be trying nass's idea
first, and then, as no mouse works, I'll be going down Eric's route.

I may be a few hours yet, but I'll get back to you.

Thanks for your time and trouble.

Best wishes.

Thank you both...

You will be pleased to note; Microsoft's procedure, as recommended by nass,
worked fine. All now seems okay. It's a lot of fiddling in the registry, but
not so much that it's partiularly difficult. Having no mouse makes it a bit
harder and a small amount of initiative is called for. Anyway, thanks again
for your help and patience.

Kind regards,

Ed
