Serious performance problems since installing updates

Gerry

A few weeks ago I upgraded my Win2K Pro system & IE6 to
the latest service levels, and have had excrutiatingly
slow network performance ever since. For example, it took
over a minute to open this page (over a broadband
connection, with a 2Ghz, 256M system). Often, attempts to
open web pages just hang and I need to restart the
browser. Other times, after a few minutes, I get a blank
page but the status bar says "Done".

The broadband connection is not the problem - another
computer on it (running XP) has not had any problems. I
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the service, with
no luck. Any other advice? Were there any default
settings changed in the updates, or anything else I should
think about?

Thanks, Gerry

Were the anti-virus application and all other Windows processes closed
before installing the updates? Did you get them all from Windows Update?

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis: Post your files to the
forum mentioned on the above page. Some of these bad guys have started
blocking users access to AdAware's and other's pages! (More at

If you cannot access the page to download HijackThis, use this link:

If you find you need CoolWebSearch Shredder, use this link:

(30 Sept-03: 1.21 is the latest version. Get a fresh copy of CWS Shredder
before each use.)

I had NAV, Zone Alarm Pro and the browser running, and I
did get the updates directly from Windows Update. NAV
definitions are current and it has not found any problems.

Thanks for those links. I'll be curious to see what they
find.

Your anti-virus application (and even firewall for some) should be disabled
before going to Windows Update and while downloading/installing anything.
You should have only one IE window open, too, the one used to reach Windows
Update. Otherwise you *may* end up with a "dirty" install. YMMV.
