Serial port plug and play

I can not get ANY serial devices to be recognized by xp and it's starting to
get annoying. Everything on the motherboard bios is enabled, I've tried just
enabling the one I'm using, I've tried manually setting up resources, xp
always recognizes the port, but never when anything is inserted, even if you
shut down, plug it in and restart, windows doesn't recognize anything. I've
reinstalled the com ports multiple times, I've disabled the virtual com port
I've been using, no luck.

This problem is more annoying than most to me, because most of them when I
ask for help, I have no idea where to start, with this one, I think I've done
just about everything that could be done to solve the problem. I'm hoping
I'm wrong and there's something I'm overlooking, or didn't know about.

If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, or what windows is doing wrong and how
to fix it, it'd be great if you could share it with me.

What are you trying to install on your serial port? Lets
start there.
Provide the details of the devices you are trying to
install on which com ports.

I will keep an eye on your post.

The Space Orb might come up as a human Interface device
until you load the CD drivers, a few review sites are
saying that it is easy to install, I just might buy
myself one it looks like fun!

The cardle is a different story. You can plug the cradle
in, and it won't do anything because essentially it is
just a bit of cable with a fancy connector at the other
end! You may find that once plugged in, you need to
attatch your PDA or other device to the cradle, to have
it activate the attention of XP, I take it you have
installed Active-Sync (and if a MS product you would
probably want Outlook on there too!)

Make sure that the Device (Palm V) is set up for USB
connectivity, and not IrDA, and the same goes with any
management software you are using to connect the 2 from
the PC's side.
Technically speaking the USB technology is designed
to "Daisychain" up to 255 devices off a single port. now
that takes some explaining so go to
http://www.howstuffworks.com/usb.htm for a good overview
if need be. I am not taking you for a dummy so I'm sure
it suffices to say that it is not XP that is at fault for
this IO error but maybe PEBCAC!

Install the relevant software from the manufacturers CD's
for the relevant devices following their instructions.
and You should have no problems. If you continue to have
problems, the following needs to be considered: Does the
hardware work on any other machine? if the behaviour is
the same, contact your supplier and report faulty
hardware!

I have a very similar problem with CASIO PV-S400Plus connected to serial
port. It supposed just to communicate with PCsynch software - and it does, so
I can synchronize device with PC files, but to do so, I had first to
uninstall PCI serial port, and since, I had error message from Device Manager
about "problem device" every time I reboot computer (under XP).
Apparently, XP demands a driver, while CASIO said that there is no need for
driver -
this is what one can expect from the operation system that require you to
click on "Start" when you want to Stop ;-)
Is there any method to disable the "new hardware wizard" search for serial
device on boot up?
