Serial Port Inoperative

I have loaded XP (home edition) on a Pentium 2 laptop.
When I start up the computer, an RS232 box lights up
normally in the COM1 port until the Windows XP logo comes
up on the screen--then no lights show & data intended to
be sent out of the COM1 port appears to go elsewhere,
(momentary hourglass indication).

The device manager shows the COM1 port to be OK.

Port worked fine using 98SE.

Any ideas??

What application?

If it's attempting direct serial port access, it's gonna fail, all
versions of Windows NT (of which XP is a variant)
disallow this as a security violation. All serial I/O has
to go through the Windows API functions.

Also, based on the "momentary hourglass" observation,
check the port speed-it may be set to 115200 or some other
ungodly high figure. Also check the handshaking is set
correctly for the device you're talking to.
