Serial Port Enumeration Problem

B

Boby George

I see the following error in my FBA log file. The system does work
though. There are 6 serial ports in my hardware. 2 from south bridge and
another 4 from a SuperIO chip hanging off the LPC bus.

Errors are towards the end of the text below. After FBA, if I go to
device manager, I see COM1, COM1, COM2, COM2, COM3 and COM4 instead of
expected COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5 and COM6.

Any idea what is going on here.

Thanks,

Boby

Boby,

Seems like the class installer (Multi-port serial adapters) missing some files while installing the driver.
Or there could be conflicts in the hardware setup.

Please take a look at the \windows\setupapi.log to get more info about the errors.

From memory you'll need to modify msports.inf. It has specific settings COMs
1,2,3 & 4 but nto the rest. Some reading of the DDK help files will be
required to get this to work.

Stuart

Yup, that a good point.
If that's the case, there will be multiple mapping mentioned for specific port number in the SetupApi.log. And that might be the
reason for the conflict.

You can modify the port settings and names under [HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\*PNP0501] reg key (sometimes *PNP0500).
(search there for entries like DosDeviceName)

I do see many errors in the setupapi.log file for missing dll's etc. But
I am assuming this is normal. regarding serial port, ACPI/PNP0501
registration does seem to happen normally. For example, one of the
initialization is logged as below.

Boby,

Seems like the class installer (Multi-port serial adapters) missing
some files while installing the driver.
Or there could be conflicts in the hardware setup.

Please take a look at the \windows\setupapi.log to get more info about
the errors.

Boby,

Do you have the following components in your image?
"Class Install Library - Msports"
"Communications Port" or "Multiport Communications Port"

You can increase the SetupAPI logging level to get more info about the error you see there:
http://www.osronline.com/DDKx/install/troubleshoot_7s6f.htm.

Ah.. that's better. Now I can see the missing PnP0501 sections :)
Please disregard my question in the previous post about the components then.

Increasing logging level still may help to figure out the other error.

I just checked it in TD. I do have "Class Install Library - Msports" and
"Communications Port". But not the "Multiport Communications Port"

I will try to increase the log level.

Thanks,
