Serial Device being recognised as a serial mouse

I am using a Garmin GPS on my serial port (COM 1). It is constantly being
recognized as a serial mouse and this is causing my Streets and Trips to
fail, I occassionally get the "blue-screen-of-death", and, on reboot, mouse
pointer is erratic and unontrollable.

I hear there's a fix so that Windows will not see it as a serial mouse but I
haven't had any luck finding it. From what I understand, it's supposed to be
an edit in the config.sys or boot.ini file. Can someone please shed some
light for me? All help is greatly appreciated.

Get a USB to Serial Cable/Adapter. I would be surprised if the Garmin
doesn't support direct USB connectivity out of the box. Have you tried
to manually override the detection of the device as a Serial Mouse and
"Forced" the appropriate drivers for it through Device Manager ?

I tried the USB to serial adapter only to get the same results. How can I
manually override the detection of the GPS as a serial mouse?

You have to override the driver selected by Plug-&-Play. If you have
a disk it should contain a drivers folder. Within that should be an .Inf
file. You use Device Manager, to update the driver - but do not let it
automatically search or pick. You use the manually select driver and
browse it to the .Inf. Once selected it should show the appropriate
description of the device. (e.g.. Garmin GPS..) It's no wonder you've
had BSODs and other issues by using an incorrect driver. I'd also do
a check on Gamin's website for an updated driver or visit their forum
and see if other users have experienced the issue and found resolution.
