I have a serial ATA (SATA) drive and for some reason WinXP is now displaying
the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the taskbar that allows for the SATA
drive to be disconnected just like a USB drive. Does anyone know how to turn
this option off for SATA drives or how to not have SATA drives removed like
this? WinXP recently started showing the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and I
have no idea why it's doing it for these types of drives.

JP:
From NVIDIA's FAQ -
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1449
"Q. SATA Hard drive shows up as removable device with NVIDIA nForce driver
within Windows XP.

A. SATA devices are defined as removable devices. All SATA devices will
show up in the "safely remove hardware" wizard because NVIDIA supports the
SATA Hot Swap function. This is not a problem or bug but by design and is
expected behavior. Please note that Windows will NOT allow you to remove a
boot drive / system volume within this Windows utility."

I believe a number of other motherboards follow this same scenario.

I don't know if the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon can be removed in this
situation, or if so, how to do it. We've yet to find a way. If anyone has, I
would be pleased to hear about it as well

My WinXP Pro started displaying the icon after installation
of a Windows security update. (I installed 11 updates in a row,
so I don't know which update did it.) The icon's GUI listed my
PCI card for USB 2.0 drives as the only item that could be
removed. But after about 6 to 8 startups, the icon went away.

Thanks Anna. That's the answer I was looking for. I only wish I could turn
off the hot swaping functionality though.
