Sequential numbering of figures within a text document

Can anyone help. I am writing a thesis that is split into chapters. Each
chapter is a seperate word document. Within each chapter are several figures
which are numbered in the order which they are referred to in the text
preceded by the chapter number e.g. In chapter one there are 15 figures
numbered Figure 1.1 to Figure 1.15.

Is there any simple way that I can get word to automatically number each
reference to a figure so that if I decide to move text around or remove or
insert figures, the numbering remains sequential.

Many thanks

You can use automatic caption numbering and cross-references, but this works
best when the chapters are all in a single document.
