Michael Isaacs

I received the following via email. It looks very
official but I cannot find any information on the
Microsoft site concerning "Sept 2003 Cumulative Patch" or
the attached file called "Q748654.exe".

I am apprehensive about installing it until I know it is
official. Any feedback??

Greetings --

What you received is either a very common malicious hoax or the
output of a computer infected by one of several well-known,
wide-spread, mass emailing worms. The most widely-known are:

W32.Gibe_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Dumaru_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Swen.A_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

Microsoft never has, does not currently, and never will email
unsolicited security patches. At the most, if, and only if, you
subscribe to their security notification newsletter, they will send
you an email informing you that a new patch is available for
downloading.

Any and all legitimate patches and updates are readily available
at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. (Notice that this is the true
URL, rather than the bogus one that may have been contained in the
email you received.) Any messages that point to any other source(s) or
claim to have the patch attached are bogus.

| I received the September 2003 patch email also. I tried
| to save it to disk so I could run a virus scan before
| opening, I have Norton Internet Security (2002). I
| received the following message...Virus
| found "worm.automat.AHB". It would not allow me to save
| it because it said it could not be fixed. I am a novice
| (extremely) user so I attempted to contact Microsoft and
| found that impossible so here I am. Do you know how to
| contact Microsoft to check the legitimacy of a product?

I received two similar e-mails overnight, one with a
Q395992.exe attachment, and the other with a Q398265.exe
attached. Norton caught one, but not the other. I don't
think that Microsoft e-mails security patches. Anyone
have more info.
