Separating Child domain from Parent

If I had a parent domain with a single child domain, and I
wanted to separate them into 2 completely independent (not
even in the same forest) domains, would the only option be
to remove the child domain completely and then create a
new separate domain?

Is there any trick that would enable me to separate the
child domain without having to lose all account info etc?

What you say is correct. Another way could be setup new domain (different
forest) and then migrate objects using ADMT or other tools.
